Cow Uses Tools to Scratch Her Back

We use tools every day. Tools help us do things more easily. We use rakes to clean up leaves in gardens. We use brooms to clean floors.

Some animals use tools. Monkeys use sticks and stones to get food. Elephants use tree branches to scratch themselves. But most animals do not use tools.

Cows use trees to scratch their sides. But they cannot scratch their backs or bellies.

Now scientists have seen a cow in Austria. She can scratch her back and belly! She uses sticks, rakes, and brooms! She picks them up with her tongue. Then she holds them with her mouth.

The cow also changes the way she uses her tools. She uses a broom to scratch her back hard. She uses the broomstick to scratch her belly softly.

Scientists are amazed. People have had cows for ten thousand years. This cow is the first to use tools!

The cow is famous now. She helps people see cows in a new way. Who knows? Maybe other cows can learn to use tools too!

Whales are Picky Eaters

Humpback Whales are big ocean animals. They eat small fish, little shrimp, and other small ocean animals.

They can't eat big things. They don't have teeth. And their throats are small. Big things can't go in. So they find small things to eat.

Crabs Make Octopus Play Piano

A Swedish musician bought a live octopus. He did not take it to his kitchen. He took it to his music studio! He put it in a big fish tank.

The musician wanted to teach the octopus how to play music! He made a small piano. He put it in the tank. But the octopus did not play the piano.

So the musician used bubbles. The octopus had to play a musical note. Then bubbles came out of the piano! Oooo! Soon, the octopus started to play one note. Then it played two notes.

But the musician wanted the octopus to play more notes. Now he uses small crabs. The octopus loves to eat them!

The octopus plays notes. It sees a crab. The crab slowly comes down a tube. Then the crab comes out!

The musician taught the octopus for six months. It can play a song with him now!

Does the octopus love to play the piano? Nobody knows. But it loves to eat crabs!

Hmmm. What else can people teach an octopus?

Superheroes in Our Daily Lives

Superheroes help people! But we do not see them in our daily lives. Seeing a superhero is a surprise!
Does this surprise make more people kind? Scientists in Italy studied this.

Pregnant women are going to have a baby. Some people are kind to pregnant women on trains. So the study had two women who looked pregnant. The women got on trains. The trains had no free seats.

The first woman took 70 trains! Twenty-nine people were kind. They gave her their seat!

The second woman and a man dressed like Batman took 68 trains! Batman stood three meters from the woman.
They did not talk to each other. Forty-one people gave her their seat!

More people were kind when Batman was there! The scientists say we do not see things around us in our daily lives. Maybe we are talking, thinking, or using our phones. But a surprise makes us see! And sometimes we see people we can help.

Let's look around and be kind! We can be superheroes in our daily lives!
