NEW TAIPEI MUNICIPAL JINSHAN HIGH SCHOOL

BRIEF HISTORY

New Taipei Municipal Jinshan High School is located in Jinshan District, New Taipei City, and is located at the heart of the North Coast. Jinshan has a unique environment with beautiful mountains and rivers. It is rich not only in natural resources, but also in humanities. Jinshan High School was established in 1946. The school was originally a junior high school starting with 60 pupils. Over the years, the school kept adding buildings and labs to provide a better learning environment. Student enrollment was growing over the years as well. In 1996, the school began to enroll senior high school students as well as junior school students and expanded to become a comprehensive high school. In 2000, an aboriginal class that focused on Indigenous music and culture was incorporated into the high school curriculum to preserve the cultural heritage of an important aspect of Taiwanese culture. The school now enrolls 650 students in 31 homerooms with a staff of 100 teachers and other school employees.

SCHOOL VISION

The school adopts innovation, consideration, and diversity as its vision and focuses to educate students to become life-long learners, who possess an open mind, problem-solving skills, and capabilities to work with other people.

SCHOOL EMBLEM

The school emblem reflects the geographical characteristics of Jinshan, where the mountain meets the sea. The blue mountain and the green sea represent the colors of the student uniforms for middle school and high school students. The seemingly contradictory colors in the school emblem invites students to look beyond the appearance and get to the core of an issue.

FACILITIES

To improve students' learning performance, the teaching facilities are complete, including computer classrooms, laboratories, cooking classrooms, baking classrooms, a student-run cafe, dance classrooms, art classrooms, and music classrooms, as well as sports venues. In addition, a magnificent library is built with a spacious reading area and a rich collection of books. The school also provides accommodation services. The dormitory is clean and tidy. Resident supervisors live in the dormitory to make sure students have a good living experience. Also, there is a kitchen on campus. The cooks and the nutritionist work together to serve teachers and students cheap, safe, healthy, and delicious meals.

The summer camp every year brings these students back to their aboriginal tribes to learn with their elders. Students hold an achievement exhibition before their graduation to show what they have learned in these three years. They are often invited to perform on various stages too.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Besides the academic programs, the student activity in Jinshan High school is also very vibrant. The school offers more than 30 different student clubs and several school teams for students to join. The student sports teams such as the basketball and volleyball ball teams have attracted many students and achieve a good record in the municipal level of the student music competition. Besides sports, The High School Wind Band and Middle School Recorder Ensemble are regular participants in the national student music competition. The aboriginal dance and music class is often invited to perform in different events, from the opening ceremony of the Universiade 2017 Taipei to local public affairs. All of which reveal the energy of the students life in Jinshan High School.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

In order to expand students’ global views, the school conducts letter and card exchanges with foreign countries. The school offers foreign language courses, conducts international educational trips, and occasionally receives visiting foreign teachers and students. The school has established sister schools with Kochi Senior High School in Japan as well as Lawrence High School, Fidelity Chinese School, Linden High School, and Joseph E. Middle School, all of which are located in New Jersey, USA. Sister schools help to facilitate substantial exchanges and mutual visits

The school emphasizes English as a tool for global communication and strives to provide meaningful English exposure in and out of the classroom. First, a native English-speaking teacher collaborates with the local teachers to engage students in an authentic environment of learning and using English. Every student in the school will have the chance of learning from the foreign teacher. Second, the school designs a variety of English activities and competitions, such as storytelling, singing, drama, and many English camps, to allow students to join and have fun. Third, the school continues to promote global education by creating online exchange programs with a foreign school as well as foreign students in Taiwan. These programs will not only engage students, but also teachers to participate in the efforts to understand the world.

MAKER EDUATION

The school spares no effort in promoting Maker Education.  Jinshan High School’s Maker Center is New Taipei City’s Maker Education and Technology Center. It integrates the concept of Maker Education into the curriculum and leads students to learn by doing. The center also promotes maker education in the schools of the north coast and remote areas.
